PM motors represent some of the most efficient and versatile motor technologies in the market when paired with the right drive technology. The ACH580 can operate an internal(embedded) permanent magnet motor (IPM) or a surface mounted PM motor (SMPM). We will review the parameters to commission these motors. We will discuss troubleshooting scenarios and steps.

The ACH580 comes default with HVAC programming and wiring details for common fan or pump applications. Process PID Loops measuring feedback from Analog Inputs for dynamic control and energy reduction opportunities. External PID Loops are also included that can control Analog Outputs for separate equipment in the HVAC system such as valves or dampers. With the CAIO-01 extension card, the total Analog I/O can be increased allowing the ACH580 series of variable frequency drive to be the direct digital controller for many HVAC applications.

This technical note is to assist an OEM in setting up and testing the "PQ and QH" (power to flow and flow to head) function of the ACH580/ACQ580 drive.  This sensorless pumping function uses pump data to calculate flow and head based on measured flow, pressure, and power.  Testing pump and motor combinations increases system accuracy by reducing data tolerance issues.

Parameter 95.01 Supply voltage has different default settings based on if the drive is a 6-pulse drive or a ULH drive. Parameter 95.02 Adaptive voltage limits is defaulted enabled for all drive types and voltage classes. Depending on the combination of settings between parameters 95.01 and 95.02 different undervoltage, overvoltage, and brake chopper triggers exist. Under certain circumstances adjustment of these two parameters may be necessary to allow the drive to function properly based off of site specific input voltage conditions.

THHN wire is sometimes used on the output side of a VFD, between the drive and motor. While ABB allows THHN to be used for HVAC and water VFDs, we do not recommend it be used.
