Tech Note 246: Design A and B motors with drives
ID:LVD-EOTKN246U-EN
,
REV:A
English
Historically, variable frequency drive specifications have had a requirement for the drive to be able to run a NEMA Design B motor. Whether an HVACR or Water & Wastewater application, this specification item is often glanced over as most motors applied to fan or pump applications have been Design B motors. With the push to increase the efficiency of AC motors, it is becoming more common to see NEMA Design A motors applied to fans and pumps. For example, the ABB / Baldor SP4 induction motor series has IE4 efficiency and uses Design A motors. This technical note discusses the differences between Design A and B motors related to fan and pump applications.
