They are generally connected in parallel with the equipment to be protected to divert the surge current. The active elements (ZnO blocks) of ABB surge arresters are manufactured using a highly non-linear ceramic resistor material, composed primarily of zinc oxide mixed with other metal oxides and sintered together. Strong focus on quality at all stages, from raw material through to finished product, ensures that ABB surge arresters survive the designed stresses with ease and with good margins. Design and testing of polymer-housed surge arresters with special emphasize on seismic stresses and selection of specific creepage in costal areas

Results from pollution withstand tests on polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arresters are given. The results are used to calculate the risk for flashover of arrester insulators at different pollution levels and for different selection of creepage distance. The calculations are calibrated against long term field test results at two heavy polluted test sites in UK and South Africa. The outcome of the calculations indicates that it is possible to significantly decrease the required creepage for arresters in coastal areas with the use of polymer-housings with silicone rubber as external insulation. Paper presented at Cigre joint colloquium, Tokyo September 2005.

This report describes the work carried out to develop a delta 420 kV compact line with 5 m phase spacing, utilising line surge arresters and elimination shield wires. Long term audible noise meaurements were taken on a full-scale outdoors test line. Special grading rings were developed and tested. The design is based on tension towers only, to overcome the clearance problems of short insulator strings on compact towers. Paper presented at Cigré general session, Paris, 1998.

Since some years, arresters with polymer-housings have been available on the market for distribution and medium voltage systems. In recent years, this type of arresters have been introduced also on higher voltage systems up to and including 550 kV. However, the international standardisation work is far behind this rapid development and many of existing designs with polymer-housings for high voltage systems have only been tested according to existing IEC standard, IEC 99-4 of 1991, which in general only covers arresters with porcelain housings. Energy stress on transmission line arresters considering the total lightning charge distribution

Tranmission line arresters may be subjected to high energy stresses caused by lightning. Calculations of energy stresses were carried out for a typical line arrester installation. Three line configurations with different degree of shielding efficiency were used for the study. The calculated results were compared with energy stresses in standardized tests on surge arresters. Thermal behaviour of ZnO surge arresters in polluted conditions.

The thermal performance of ZnO surge arresters were studied in the laboratory and in the field. Results from two natural pollution test sites are presented in terms of temperature rise and charge accumulation. The feasibility of reproducing the thermal stress on the arresters in the laboratory by means of the salt fog method and the slurry method is discussed.
